In option 1, instead of using edge IDs to identify the routes, we can use polygons to define shipment route areas. This approach would make it easier to maintain consistency and render the routes on the map.
I think option 1 would give us more control over the interface. Hopefully, we can narrow the list down to 20-30 items and assign names to each one.
@cameronkruse @kushankb for us to implement this feature, we'll need to have curated "areas" that we can aggregate maritime flows within. We defer to your expertise on how to group these (e.g., North Atlantic, Central Atlantic, South Atlantic), but we'll need polygons with names that we can then aggregate against.
Given that we're towards the end of this phase of the project, I'd suggest that we postpone implementing this until a future phase. By dropping, we can keep the visibility of flows within the transportation section, but remove interactivity and remove visibility in the overview page to ensure we're not overwhelming users.
