How do we want to introduce the application?

@cameronkruse would you prefer to have a splash page to introduce the website, or should we present the global view to let users start exploring immediately?

Thanks for thinking about this, I would like a splash page. It doesn't have to be something complex, but a separate page would helpful to introduce some concepts and allow us to link to research and foundational data.
