Creating this issue to note places where we could better handle an error to be more friendly to the user.

[ ] abc-new-template: check that the course_materials directory exists and fail gracefully if it does not (currently throws a FileNoteFoundError and dumps a trackback)

[ ] abc-clone - when ssh isn't setup (will create an issue now) it fails quietly - #315 id like this to be prioritized in the next set of fixes.
