just realized while downloading extrae
that it is integrated with eclipse/ptp; can we put this one tick higher?

Other performance tools (TAU, Scalasca, Periscope) have Eclipse/PTP plugins as well.
Since it is open source and some people could be using it indeed, it may be a huge plus: http://www.eclipse.org/ptp/
