your writeable directories in eXist-db #635

Each of you now has a file directory in eXist named with your Pitt userid: you can save your queries here if you like. Generally you want to keep your XQuery scripts in a separate place from your collections of XML documents--and your personal directory, which should only be readable and writeable to you, is a good place for that. Check it out and see if you can save your work in your own directory. Also see if you can navigate to your project directory.

Don't think of this eXist-db as a space that's regularly backed up. (I do backups on my database, but not all that frequently, and since this installation is for me basically a teaching environment, I tend to treat things in here as temporary.) So think about where to back up your work. You'll be filing and updating project XML code here to process it, but you want to make sure that any project code you're working on that you save to my eXist-db is also safely stored and version-controlled in your GitHub repo. As for your XQuery scripts, you may want to keep your own copies of scripts outside the database.

If you want, you can install eXist-db locally on your own computers. Here are instructions for doing that: http://exist-db.org/exist/apps/doc/
