When auto-save functionality is active, every n seconds a notification popup informs me that the file has been changed. This is annoying and distracting.

Many UI applications have a status bar to display such information. For example Libre Office Writer:
If a status bar is no option, at the very least make it configurable to disable the auto-save notification popup.
