When shipped, it's possible that the device target subscription is still not defined. In such scenarios, auto-provisioning mechanism can be used where:

• the devices can be shipped with a uniform clean setup (bootstrapping subscription)
• once defined, the target subscription will be automatically deployed
• the device is capable to:
  • connect the bootstrapping subscription
  • receive the target subscription
  • switch to the target subscription
