Error when publish the second version of the same extension #764

I want to deploy a local openvsx instance for my team, I following the instruction at https://github.com/eclipse/openvsx/wiki/Deploying-Open-VSX.

Everything is ok. but when I want to publish the second version of the same extension: the following error ocurred.

My environment:

After some research, I found the following things:

When publish a extension, the 'extension_version' table is write first at here: https://github.com/eclipse/openvsx/blob/089012fd7dcb59ee76577914da5946bed37bd08f/server/src/main/java/org/eclipse/openvsx/publish/PublishExtensionVersionHandler.java#L157

however when write the extension file into database, 'extension_version' table is write again here https://github.com/eclipse/openvsx/blob/089012fd7dcb59ee76577914da5946bed37bd08f/server/src/main/java/org/eclipse/openvsx/publish/PublishExtensionVersionService.java#L82

Which result in the error ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "unique_extension_version"

After coment this line of code, I can publish multiple version of the same extension, and everything seems works ok. But I am not sure if this is a right fix.

have this exception too, and i found it seems to be a transactional usage bug in publish, the root cause is the transactional can not cross multi threads, as the transaction manager is hold in threadlocal, In the publish process，it has transactional annotation，while it emit a new thread to handle file source upload in publishAsync,

    public void publishAsync(FileResource download, TempFile extensionFile, ExtensionService extensionService) {

and in each filesource insert operation，the filesource bounded with extentionVersion，and will insert extentionVersion if not exists, So， we got two thread in operate extentionVersion insert, the main publish thread with transaction will operate transaction process to insert extentionVersion and the upload thread will too if extentionVersion have not been inserted, Therefore in some conditions,the main publish thread transaction will fail, as upload have inserted

@CFFPhil I've converted the async method into a job. The job sometimes throws a NullpointerException at the beginning, because the entity hasn't been persisted yet. In that case the job retries. I'll add a entityManager.flush() call to see if that resolves the NullpointerException in the job. I'll submit the PR later today.

@amvanbaren I don't think entityManager.flush() can resolves this, as the main publish process is a transaction, the db operation will be commit after the function, the upload job thread and the main publish thread are concurrent. anyway, the upload should start after the transaction commit, maybe using a signal,or continue retry to get version, the spring transaction manager support , it can be fix like this

The publishAsync method still is within that transaction. I've removed the @Transactional annotations and the entityManager.merge is no longer needed.

@amvanbaren As I tracked this issue, you already fixed this issue and done to merge it. remove transactional from LocalRegistryService.publish I didn't know if it is a mistake or intentional, but I have confirmed that some of the modifications are missing from the latest version. "synchronized" keyword has been missing after merging below 2 commits. Use job instead of @async Revert "Use job instead of @async"

Please check this issue and if necessary, correct it.

Yes, that wasn't by accident. The EntityManager that Spring autowires is a thread aware proxy https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-data-examples/issues/269#issuecomment-288303341
