Note that in the second case, the initialization of the DI model for an existing UML resource does set the architecture context and viewpoint for UML Light. This is different to the normal Papyrus behaviour, which just lets the workspace default take effect. This should not damage anything in the UML resource because the architecture context information is maintained in the DI resource, which is created new.
Testing Note
Please make sure that all of the capabilities in the UML Light Papyrus Functionality category are disabled in the preferences. Otherwise, you will see redundant new-wizards in the Project Explorer context menu and shortcut menus (those being the ordinary Papyrus UML wizards).
