Here's how it could potentially impact the data analysis:

  1. Underrepresentation of Certain Industries: If certain industries with higher accident rates are not required to report, the overall dataset may not accurately reflect the true distribution of workplace accidents across industries. This can lead to biased estimates, especially if the excluded industries have substantially different accident rates compared to the included ones.

  2. Establishment Size Effects: Industries that are not required to report may vary in their size distribution compared to those that are required to report. This can bias estimates of the relationship between establishment size and accident rates if the excluded industries have different size distributions or if the relationship between size and accidents varies across industries.

  3. Limited Generalizability: The findings based on the dataset that includes only reporting industries may not be generalizable to all industries, as they may not capture the full range of variation in accident rates across different types of workplaces. This could potentially limit the importance of our data findings.

  4. Potential Misinterpretation of Results: Researchers may misinterpret the results if they assume that the dataset represents all industries equally. They may overgeneralize findings or draw incorrect conclusions about the effectiveness of safety interventions or regulations.

Potential Add to Data Section:

OSHA collects data primarily from private sector employers, including those in construction, general industry, and maritime. The agency's coverage extends to federal government employees, excluding those in the United States Postal Service. OSHA's data collection also excludes a number of establishments based on the polices of The North American Industry Classification System. These establishments are not involved in manufacturing directly but are still exposed to workplace injuries. For example, one exemption to the data set it is the Motion Picture and Video Industry, which would not necessarily be categorized as safe. Another important impact of these exclusions pertains to the size of the excluded sectors. For instance, retail workers, who typically work in large establishments, are not included in the dataset. This exclusion may introduce a skew in the results, particularly when analyzing larger establishment sizes. Understanding the industries excluded from the data set is extremely important because every exclusion limits the application of our analysis.
