Detailed Data Plan (Dec. 6, 2023)

We are testing if the average personal & household income of specific groups increases/shows any trend over time (1950-2020):

The idea is that the South began to have better economic opportunities in the 1970s, but only those with higher income have the ability to migrate to take advantage of those opportunities. Historically, White people have been able to more freely migrate because they had a higher average income due to the racial wage gap, but in the 1970s, Black average income increased more rapidly than White average income, narrowing the racial wage gap and explaining the significant number of Black people who, along with White people, also moved form the North to the South in search of better economic opportunities.

Other Info

Tasks for each sample

  1. Make sure .dat and .do files are downloaded and ready to use for this sample
  2. Get the average personal income for Black people who moved to the South (birthplace OR residence 5 years ago is not a Southern state but residence 1 year ago is)
  3. Get the average personal income for White people who moved to the South
  4. Average household income, Black people...
  5. Average household income, White people...
  6. Record all of the numbers (use Excel for now--until 12/8 presentation)

@ecn310/migration I see this plan for the analysis. Where is your plan for the documentation? This is going to be particularly important for your project since you have so much data in so many different files.
