Hosting a secure Shiny app on the cloud (AWS, Appache, etc.)? #19

Hi folks.

Does anyone have experience with hosting a secure Shiny App on Amazon (AWS) or similar cloud service?

I know that you can purchase secure/authenticated hosting on Shinyapps.io, but I'm asking on behalf of a friend back in South Africa... Unfortunately, RStudio's professional pricing schedule is a bit beyond her means at current exchange rates. From my friend's email:

"Our one issue right now is that we need some kind of authentication and we can't afford the shinyapps package that provides that. I've done some looking around and the most popular way to share shiny apps is using appache or AWS servers. Have you ever tried to securely share your shiny apps? Do you know of any other quick, easy and cheap ways to securely share shiny apps online?"

Thanks in advance.
