hey Eco Detectives! In the interest of finally finishing this up so we can move on to a different book, I tried coding through chapter 8. My plots and results are not quite the same as what's in the book... would be good to see what others come up with. I am not super experienced with optim() and wonder if it is a bit noisy when optimizing, or if the data and parameters are just really finicky. I'm seeing a lot of noise and hypersensitivity to starting par estimates in the results for parts 8.2 and 8.3. I might also try constrOptim() or trying a fine grid around the two noisiest parameters.
I'm gonna keep chugging through to the end of the book so if anyone else wants to join me, maybe we can get together and discuss after the new quarter starts?
