Chapter 3 #13

Open oharac opened 4 years ago

oharac commented 4 years ago

Chapter 3 starter Rmds are pushed to the repo. I did one for the chapter text, and a separate one for the problems. This is a long chapter - the first part is pretty straightforward but then later gets into some more challenging stats stuff.

There are no matrices in this chapter, but some interesting parts about creating expressions that can then be evaluated, so you can plot a function (in the math sense of function) directly rather than creating a whole dataframe of values.

There are also bits on ANOVA, mixed effects, etc.

For next week, let's just each try to recode the base R stuff into tidyverse R, including making nice plots in ggplot (and therefore having to think about prepping the data for ggplot). I don't think there's too much challenging code, so hopefully we can spend some time chatting through the concepts next week, especially the later parts of the chapter, and then get to the problems the following week.

hey all, I won't be able to join tomorrow to go over chapter 3 questions... and haven't had a chance to look at them yet anyway. Feel free to meet without me (the zoom link should work without me), and I'll see you all next week.

I have to second Casey. I have a big thingy due Friday, so won't be able to make it tomorrow

I missed last week and not sure if I’ll be in service tomorrow, so would gladly take another week to catch up on ch3 problems if people want to? I will be back in person next week :)

Skipping this week sounds like a good way to go. That being said, I'll be gearing up to travel next week so probably will be MIA for the coming weeks. I have the pine room reserved for next week and through September though. (If anyone decides to meet this week, the pine room is booked but we have the visitors center) Good luck finishing up the summer, everyone!

hey all - Jess is out of town but I'm planning to meet tomorrow for Primer of Ecology chapter 3. It has some good practice with using ordinary differential equations in R which I've not done before - so you can implement continuous time models rather than just the discrete time ones we've probably all used before.

Hope to see some of y'all tomorrow! I'll try to get there early to get a key from Dee, but if anyone else is feeling industrious please feel free to take the lead on that too.

I’ll be there (in person)!

Hey guys. I dropped the ball on this and definitely am not prepared, so thinking I’m going to pass this round.

Hope it’s a good meeting though!

I have friends in town today, so I need to prepare for that. Sorry y'all. Differential equations in R sounds like fun though!

For tomorrow at 11, we'd talked about finishing up chapter 3 so we can move on to chapter 4 next week. Here's the Zoom link for anyone remote (but let us know so we know whether to log in to the Zoom call from campus!): https://ucsb.zoom.us/j/848411584

I finished up the Chapter 3 questions, they're not all that bad. I also put up starter Rmds for Chapter 4.
