This PR makes further progress on the Harmenberg notebook.

It is still missing a couple of TODOs, but @llorracc wanted to incorporate the latest version.

Chris: this incorporates your cosmetic edits, and homogenizes the notation with macros at the top of the file.

Well, it also adds the progress I had made early this week and which you did not have in your branch.
