Brainstorm game-preview metrics #2

Open econne01 opened 11 years ago

One of our leading ideas at this point is to come up with some stats-based measures to preview any upcoming game. This should ideally give the game viewer some key points to watch for during the game and perhaps give the fan some insight into his/her team's game strategy. We will manually come up with 3-5 key points for a past game to brainstorm how we might programmatically preview future games.

Tasks to complete this task include:

  1. Decide on a game to manually preview
  2. Search data sources (intentionally vague) for interesting metrics that might be useful to know before the game. Suggestions a. Starting pitcher pitch selection breakdown b. Starting pitcher average pitch count in a "good" or "bad" game c. Particularly good/bad stolen base matchups (runner vs catcher) d. Super star hitter weaknesses (slider, up and in pitches, same-handed pitchers) e. Ability of bullpen (when pitching 1, 2, ..., 5 innings?)
  3. Discuss

I suggest using this game, Phillies vs Nat's on Aug 1, 2012 http://www.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=320801120&teams=philadelphia-phillies-vs-washington-nationals

Also, FYI, here is the game preview written at the time. Might be annoying to try to get the data available at that time, but not after... not sure, might be easy.

Good call. What I was trying to convey yesterday is that we conduct a pilot, or proof of concept...which is what we're doing. So I conveyed it, just not as concisely or intelligently as I would have liked. Great job getting this going Eric!.
