Just what it says. Ain't pretty (concerning the now even longer list comprehension) but beauty will return with the next PRs.

Something to bear in mind (but which probably isn't worth leaving dangling code for at this point): in the future we will want to be able to deal with multiple MC streams (which will squash most of the code in this PR).
