From @titaniumbones in #121:

We're often asked this question, and we often have a very hard time answering, because the "data" might be in any of several places. We should incrementally improve our capacity to answer this question, with:

  • a search form or chatbot that executes most of those searches for the user

Our current status is:

In (old) convos on this a couple of thoughts were tossed around including

This is an issue we're still hearing a lot. I think we should spend some time thinking about this (and the coverage repo) as an org and especially within Archiving WG. cc @lightandluck

Agree, this is an aspect of the Archiving WG that I've never gotten a handle on, so would love to improve clarity for anyone interested in this question (which includes me!)

@lightandluck I feel like we've come a long way in our understanding of data generally since this conversation– what do you think about this issue at this point?

lightandluck commented 5 years ago

Personally I don't know what the archived data is? I think I've heard that stuff is in the Internet Archive, but I don't know what the list of those things are or how to find them in the IA.

Have you been able to find that out?

patcon commented 5 years ago

fwiw I heard this "where's the data" question just last night from @dkurukula.

I maybe had the wrong answer, but basically said that it all migrated into other systems like Internet Archive, and that the more active focus of EDGI had become web-monitoring

Frijol commented 5 years ago

As far as I know that's more or less correct (though, active focus of EDGI is a good bit broader, now covering environmental data justice, theories for future of archiving through decentralized technologies, etc. as well as web monitoring)
