^^ I missed a lot of conversations with people interested in ongoing work at NYC-- can you all loop in who you think is appropriate?
A friend of mine runs this fantastic service intended to facilitate exactly this in an async fashion: statushero.com It has a super great slack-bot integration. Any interest in giving it a shot for say, a week?
@b5 totally down to look at a service to support. I think we want some sort of in-person anchor given how distributed our team is...? I could see an async more frequent check in and a weekly sync thing being complementary?
(Bias: I find quick meetings super effective as a way to build community)
@patcon I feel like you got a good perspective around this stuff, your thoughts?
Couldn't agree more. I want to talk to all of you once a week :)
Great idea!
With potentially lots of people on the standup, it will be important to maintain standup hygiene: keep conversations succinct and take them offline when needed.
@dcwalk big +1 for getting face-time in remotely :) weekly video seems a sound choice for a minimum bar
- Test/setup a permanent Google Hangout link
Depending on numbers and how much e2e encryption fits the values/needs of the project, this Jitsi Meet video conferencing service is run by some good, trustworthy folks: https://meet.calyxinstitute.org/ https://calyxinstitute.org/about/board
Hah just realized I called a remote standup "in-person" ;) @patcon -- I'm having trouble loading the service :(( But I am π― down for using the services that reflect the web I want to live in (aka e2e foss)
If you do decide on Google Hangouts, this might be a less interrup-y way of communicating aspirational timeboxes: https://hangout-timer-app.appspot.com/
I'm all up for it
that background looks familiar :)
A couple of questions:
Sounds good to me. I second @artlogic's suggestion of keeping written minutes -- maybe a Google doc or hackpad.
- Will there be some record of what was discussed for people that can't make it?
Again, an argument for Google Hangouts if you favour this sort of transparency over other values in this instance: Gittip used Hangouts-on-Air for our daily standups, so the video would be archived and reviewable on YouTube. (Could complement written minutes, which would be a real summary for busy people.)
https://plus.google.com/+gittip
Happy to help someone set up that routine. Accounts need to be connected in a specific way.
This is great. Scheduling time? If everyone could fill out their availability here, it'll speed up picking a time slot. The times are for next week, but ideally we'd pick a time slot we can host weekly: http://doodle.com/poll/niq3396gun334cv5
@b5 -- We were aiming for Tuesday as that is when a good chunk of people have been syncing up, but better to pick now and hold to it. Appears our schedules aren't in sync π’
edit: Sunday is in there twice, do we need to have that? I think it might be a bit confusing
@artlogic: my hope is that the discussion is 'flat' enough that new people to the project as well as key contributors could join in, and have it open. (e.g. -- an answer to "where do you need help?" could be: finding my first issue to work on, finding a project that my skills suit, or landing some important feature)
I think however this should not be a first intro to the project, we need to improve our onboarding (aka HAVE SOME) and support for newer contributors. I wanna borrow from Public Lab's work because it is amaaaazing: We should consider revisiting our first sprint conversations:
- Establish and document preliminary work process (i.e. where we document issues and how we make changes)
- Add contributor guidelines (and code of conduct?)
- e.g. Public Labs
- See further Contributor Covenant and issue #35 touch on this.
Updating the checklist above to require some protocol doc for how we run these meetings based on all your input!
Hi all, new member here! I filled out the doodle based on my availability this week in Pacific time. I can probably make time on subsequent weeks in whatever slot you choose, even if I can't make it this week :)
@edgi-govdata-archiving/nyc Hi NYC people interested in ongoing development work! We are looking to set up a weekly (remote) standup based on everyone's availability. Please complete this doodle poll: http://doodle.com/poll/niq3396gun334cv5. π

Awesome! Just a quick question @dcwalk -- are those eastern, central, or pacific times?
Ugh, thanks for the catch @WestleyArgentum. They are EST. @b5 can you update without having people to resubmit responses?
Are we an official 501(c)(3)? We could get some pricing breaks on collaboration tools.

@dcwalk / @WestleyArgentum / @aschn unfortunately time zones aren't supported at all. Is it possible for everyone to confirm that they answer in EST? Pardon the East-coast centrism :/
@atkolkma -- my understanding is not currently. We were thinking Hangouts on Air and Youtube Streaming for the first ones?

Yeah, I tried last night too. Unfortunately, Hangouts has a max limit of 10 people.

So, obviously we learned something last night about how not to do this. We'll try to figure it out more definitively in time for next week. Thanks for bearing with us!

Issues from last time:
- Hit roomsize limit
JitMeet 2014 thread: http://users.sip-communicator.dev.java.narkive.com/I2krM1po/jitsi-users-jitmeet-max-participants
- How many can the bridge support on a given hardware config
- How many can JitMeet handle
Currently the answer to 1 is very floating as it is something we are actively looking into. Our goal is to be able to support up to 100 people per server before the summer.
JitMeet is in a slightly similar situation: currently it would just show people as they enter the room and that starts becoming too much around 10 or 12.
So assuming things have only gotten better, the limits for [Calyx Institute's JitMeet service(https://meet.calyxinstitute.org) are probably hardware-based. I'd be happy to reach out to Nick to see whether he's ever stress-tested their limits. If he has time, I'm sure he'd be willing to spare some to ensure the service works for this project :)
Any guess on how many tried to join?
- Background noise at Civic Tech was too high (spoke about using a breakout room the next couple weeks)
I confirmed that you guys are good to snag the small room on the right behind stage (when facing it from audience). @s-kennedy has your back as MC if anyone else tries to call it! You guys can sneak in before and do setup if you'd like, so you can just dash in asap
EDIT: In a followup convo, it was suggested that it should be on you guys to claim the room early (less on MC's plate) so feel free to setup early over pizza, and pitch your breakout as early as possible to avoid confusion
Okay, update -- We are going to give this another go in a quieter room... a wee bit later, 7:45 EST on Tuesdays, on Zoom, which doesn't have any call caps.
Here is the link for tomorrow, but it'll also live (and eventually move to) our slack:

Post-NYC conversation about how to maintain development going forward, a key outcome is that we will begin testing out a weekly standup (of no more than 30 mins [and maybe a goal to get that number lower]).
First iteration will be going around to ask the following questions to anyone who shows up:
Based on availability we are going to schedule it on Tuesdays at 7:45pm
