The Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO) defines the sets of things that are of interest in financial business applications and the ways that those things can relate to one another. In this way, FIBO can give meaning to any data (e.g., spreadsheets, relational databases, XML documents) that describe the business of finance.

DER-134 - Support for Certificates #1889

There is a gap in our derivatives representation with respect to certificates. Certificates are popular in the European market. They do not appear to be marketable in the US market. There are 3 main types of Certificates: Bonus, Discount and Index that we should represent in FIBO, and this issue is to include them. From a CFI perspective, these are structured instruments (structured products) with participation.

Note that in the CFI, structured instruments may be based on debt, equities, or possibly other things such as carbon credits. They are all based on some underlier, however, and thus the DER FCT determined to incorporate them under derivatives in a new ontology. This new ontology will cover the specific kinds of certificates listed in the CFI, including these main categories described above. The work will necessarily include reconcilliation of what we currently have under structured finance with the new, more comprehensive definition of structured product.
