Here's OS X built from SVN. I could't attach it directly to here because

I've tried the non-official binary above and faced many issues - not sure if
they are
related or if it is a Gear issue at large. I've had to disable offline
entirely. I've
lost e-mail that I thought had been sent (but hadn't - and no "backup" in draft
or
outbox, simply lost). In other cases, e-mails have been sent without their
attachments. And sometime, the sync would simply not work anymore (had to
disable,
CLEAN THE LOCAL COPY, and re-enable).
Offline Mail is morphed from an uber-cool feature to a total nightmare in a few
months - I'd advise you to simply disable this feature.

Had the same issues when trying chrome's built-in gears two or three weeks ago,
so I
think it's a general problem. I copied the text of all messages in the outbox
to
clipboard and re-sent them after disabling gears and deleting the gears data,
so no
mail was really lost (but delayed, and the receiving person would not know I
had sent
it earlier but it didn't work). Still not the thing I'd like to experience.
Would be OK if we had a working html5 solution already, but till it's here I
want a
working gears :-(
Original comment by johannes...@gmail.com
on 22 Feb 2010 at 1:39
fully agree johannes.slotta, it is really a "nor neither" situation: Gear is
not
working fine and no HTML5 solution is yet there.
BTW, since were actually ok when it was not yet possible to attach files while
offline. Since we can (and since anything goes through the outbox first),
problems
started popping up.

Seeing as they started letting it die with Snow Leopard, I simply gave up and
moved on.
Mind you, if this is how they're going to handle things, I'll be a LOT more
leery of
using Google products in the future. And perhaps it's time to re-evaluate a
lot of
what I currently use Google for.

We had some problem with an application on Safari/Snow Leopard and Apple didn't
do
anything to help us to fix the problem. On Firefox 3.5/3.6 and Opera 10 we have
no
problem. I think Apple isn't very helpful in case of problems.
Gears works fine on FF 3.0/3.5, and other supported browsers (IE6/7/8, ...). It
's
not an official release, but beta one. So let them fix the problems with FF 3.6
(wich
came out less than one month).
Safari is HTML5 compliant (Local Cache for offline application, Web SQL
Database,
WebWorkers,...) and Gears was only expected to give opportunities for older
browsers
to have same features.
I think if Mozilla had supported Web SQL database in Firefox 3.6 Gears was not
usefull in this version.
So bee Cool and wait or try to help.

Gentlemen, this will help you to solve the Issue:
http://ifolder.ru/16205356
This gears compilation perfectly works with FF 3.6 for Windows 32bit ver. You
got to
drug and drop the dowloaded file to your FireFox window and install it.
The link is taken from: http://habrahabr.ru/blogs/firefox/82358/
There you can find 64bit linux version as well.
The info and comments are in Russian, but hope you'll cope with it :))
Best wishes, from Russia

From Wikipedia "In late November 2009, numerous online news sources reported
that
Google is going to migrate to use HTML 5 rather than Gears in the future. A
Google
spokesman later clarified that Google will however continue to support Gears to
not
break sites using it." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gears_%28software%29
I think they will support it until a working HTML 5 solution is usable.
Original comment by bigras.b...@gmail.com

i believe you this, but why would google introduce a new feature in adwords
that is
in need of google gears? that's how i found this. I wanted to install it, had
ff 3.6
and didn't work. so i googled after it and found this.
so that's why I don't get the sense of introducing a new feature, unless the
right
hand doesn't know what the left one does on google.
anyway, thanks. I just won't use the new feature then if it's not compatible
and if
they don't officially release it.

#73: the very same article you're quoting
(http://gearsblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/hello-html5.html) says:"Support for
Gears in
Firefox (including 3.6, which will be supported shortly) and Internet Explorer
will
continue."
The article was posted on Feb 19th.

For me, Gears 0.5.36.0 (winxp/win32) is still causing problems even in Gmail.
In Gmail: While online for long periods, synchronization actually gets "stuck"
and
stops -- with the icon still showing online and synchronized. New mail still
arrives, and it looks like everything's working fine until I realize sent mail
items
have been sitting in the Outbox for hours on end. Refreshing the page seems to
unstick it, and it syncs all changes for the last day or so, but it's obnoxious
to
have to keep making sure mail got sent.
As another commenter said, it won't work in Docs at all.
Original comment by dskimb...@gmail.com

I have foolishly arranged my life so that I can't work without Gmail and Google
Docs
offline (mainly when aboard non-WiFi flights), but have stuck with Firefox 3.5
because of threads like this. If I hadn't, I would have had to migrate two
organizations I help run away from Google Docs, after putting my credibility on
the
line over the last year to get them to switch to Google Docs. I find it
unfortunate
that a company the size of Google does not have the resources to keep Gears in
synch
with Firefox.

I lost 20-30 messages that I had composed and sent while offline. They
disappeared from my Outbox, but never were actually sent. If anyone has ideas
about whether those messages might have been put somewhere that they could be
found, I would be eternally grateful.
I am running firefox 3.6.6, gears 0.5.36.0.
Offline docs don't work, either, but at least it doesn't pretend to.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.12 (portable from portable apps) and Gears 0.5.36.0 and
appear to have had no problems.
I bcc everything to a separate account and don't appear to have anything
missing...
Although every so often I get an error code (12?) where it sends it, but the
draft is still shown when online. I also have the undo labs option turned on.
Advantages of portable version:
a) Can encrypt the whole lot including my email
b) I only have one folder to search for lost data!
