eduVPN wont't start connection (openvpn) on Android 9, instead crashes #380

We are in the middle of the transitioning to eduVPN. While most devices work fine, we now got a bunch of Issues regarding eduVPN on Android 9 as we really start to roll out the new service.

The profile configuration works fine, but starting the connection doesn't - instead the App crashes. The log states "probably crashed probably because of memory pressure ".

We only provide OpenVPN, no Wireguard in our setup.

Is there something we could check to help you to fix this issue? We do have an affected device with Android 9 to try sth.

For the moment we have a clunky workaround (with a manually created OpenVPN profile from the eduVPN Portal and the OpenVPN APP)...

It seems Android 9 is not getting security updates since Jan'22 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history

But are working on fix to make it work. Relevant link https://github.com/schwabe/ics-openvpn/issues/1558, fix in this eduVPN pull request https://github.com/eduvpn/android/pull/375

We are currently waiting till the pull review has been done. Should be a matter of a few weeks before we can release it.

Hi, are there any news on this?

efef commented 1 year ago

hi @Lukas-UAUX sorry for the delay. Could you please try our 3.1.0 release: https://github.com/eduvpn/android/releases/tag/3.1.0

@Lukas-UAUX just submitted 3.1.1 in the Google Play store, users will gradually get this new version

Lukas-UAUX commented 1 year ago

Thank you, I will test it when it reaches the Play Store

@efef

I still only see version 3.0.1 from 07.11.22... Has Google possibly declined the Update?

Sorry you're right. It was submitted, but somehow we have to click "Changes ready to send for review" . It seems Google introduced this step earlier this year but I missed it.

Do you mind I start the roll-out end of August?
