I'm in a git repo but

  vcs_branch:async
  vcs_status:async
  vcs_dirty:async

do not seem to have any effect. No symbols shown. Using latest version. Any clues how to investigate this?

Could you please upload a screenshot here? And how did you install, manual or via a plugin manager?
