Default albums for new users #50

People will probably expect the usual trappings of scraps, featured, and favorites. So offer to give them generic albums like those when they first sign up. (Opt-in or opt-out?)

epii commented 11 years ago

Given:

  1. Favorites is a feature many people use;
  2. Without any albums a user cannot collect favorites; and
  3. People are prone to "Next"-spamming straight through non-goal screens

I think it should be opt-out.

Also, as a browser, I personally dislike "scraps". When I wish to see all of an artist's art I'm not looking for the Best Of selection, I'm looking for all of the artist's art! ... presumably because I've seen some other art of theirs and thought it was pretty rad, so I'm not likely to be too judgmental about what I find either.

Anyway, what semantics were we planning to have associated with the "scraps" album? Other sites seem to treat its contents as completely separate from everything else a user has uploaded. I can't see us doing that on floof, but perhaps it would be a blacklisted filter element in the default user page gallery widget (cf #21)? If so, would there be a separate "All Art (inlc Warts)" link elsewhere on the user page? Or would the only link like that be the "See All..." or whatever on the widget and maintain the scraps exclusion?

Why not have "scraps" just be a tag? Same with "featured".

epii is totally correct, both on the uselessness of the site without these defaults in place and on how maddening "scraps" is from a peruser's point of view.

"scraps" doesn't belong as a tag because tags are meant to objectively describe the picture—and to be controlled by the community rather than the artists. Anyway, I still don't like the idea of an opt-in flag that makes art harder to find by default. If you only want a subset of your art to appear on your main page (whatever that ends up looking like), pick an album to promote or something.
