If done really well, this could be pretty cool. So far I have only seen it done... not really well.
Artists would advertise:
What they will draw or not draw (tags?!)
Example pieces
Payment methods they can accept
Price ranges based on standard axes like background, number of characters, finishedness, etc. But also allow freeform pricing.
Perhaps an artist can have multiple ads for different kinds of art, where the pricing would otherwise be particularly complex. Perhaps not.
Users could search through this like nuts and we could show "commissions open" on the artist's userpage.
Also, maybe, the very notion of a commission would optionally be a first-class thing. I.e., the user provides a description and references and whatever, and the artist accepts or declines, and a price is set, and the current status is tracked for both sides, and all this stuff is gathered in one place for easy perusal. And the artist can make the results and/or price and/or time public to show off how cool and fast they are. Maybe.
