ffmpeg is used allready for this in Doom3-BFG and the old aliens vs predator engine remake. The AVP remake goes even further with backported bink and smasher libraries from ffmpeg so you dont have to use the entire ffmpeg package.
Pretty nice indeed, and there are also other similarly separated derived works. If you just have to play the vanilla videos though (i.e. you don't have to roll out your own), it doesn't really make sense to waste quality with re-encoding to anything else.

Couldn't there be some kind of solution where the cinematics are converted from BINK in to a free format and allowed to be played in game?
