I'm trying this with a more complex project, and getting my head back around how the buildpack works. Some notes for next time:

All of my work so far is on the simplify_deploy branch.
- This has been merged to master, so the readme reflects this fork, and not the official Heroku buildpack.
Most of the work is done in bin/steps/autoconfigure.
- The autoconfigure script is called from bin/compile.
This is a really compelling project.
