Deploy to a new server

I want to deploy this project to a new server, under a proper domain name. Once main users of existing site have moved to this site, destroy current server.

• [x] Register a domain name.
• [x] Build new server.
• [x] Deploy this project to new server, so it's being served over ip address.
  • [x] Use git push approach.
  • [x] Configure settings for live db.
  • [x] Serve with nginx and gunicorn.
  • [x] Set up ssl using letsencrypt.
  • Configure settings for live static files. (whitenoise?) Not needed; nginx is taking care of this for now.
• [x] Associate this server with domain name.
• [x] Set up email transactions with this domain.
  • [x] Make sure Site object set up correctly on live server.
• [x] Invite myself.
• [x] Set up cronjob and make sure it's updating plot image before sharing further.
• [x] Invite initial users, who have been using earlier version of site.

Setting up git

• [x] Use git push approach.
  • [x] Some issue with main vs master? remote: fatal: You are on a branch yet to be born
  • [x] Is there some default that's trying to push master to live folder on post-receive, rather than main?
  • [x] Probably want to update git (at 2.25 now, 2.28 supports main better), and then redo server .git repo setup (this)
  • [ ] Ask DO to update this post, as they've done for basic server deployment guides, focused on main? Rewrite this myself?

Final tasks

• [x] rysnc config files from server, but keep them out of version control.
• [x] Make backup for /etc/letsencrypt as well.
• [x] Hide accept_invitation form after a valid form has been submitted. (feedback from initial user)

Set up transaction emails

• [x] Configure email to be trusted.
• [x] Make sure production settings reflect the admin@khmpsitka.org email.
  • [x] Modify invite message to specify support email address as well.
  • (not needed) Test the khmpsitka.org domain locally for emailing invites?
• [x] Make my own superuser account.
  • [x] Make the Site object.
• [x] Use su account to invite myself.
  • [x] I received the email, the link worked, but got the message "Sorry, this request can not be processed."
  • In production shell, I can see that the new account was created, has_usable_password() is False.
  • I should be able to modify the view code and find the issue, without resending the invite email.
  • The link sent me to localhost! settings.py issue?
  • [x] BASE_URL was localhost in production settings. Fixed.
  • [x] Re-send invitation email, see if link is to live site.
  • Works now; my account is live.
