GUI exception with topology generator and select1.0 error #176

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. close, start new CORE window with empty canvas
2. click layer-2 nodes, then hub
3. topology generator --> random(5)
4. repeat step 3, and error pops up

fixed in r680

can also trigger bug by placing RJ45, then starting scenario, pressing cancel; 
the
layer-2 or layer-3 node menu is still selected, along with the select tool
