The pop up bar appears at the bottom of the screen on hover

Add/remove buttons via config ini
Add/remove buttons via interface
always on
always off
on hover (current)
button - invoked, cursor at first option
place at top/bottom of screen
bar scrolling - a halfway position on the bar moves the focus halfway through the collection of the source

On screen Left and Right arrow key appear at the side of the screen -
add the above options

So the task itself seems pretty doable, especially different options for hiding and showing the whole bar (specific buttons would be more work, but shouldn't be too difficult).

However, I'm a bit confused how that relates to browsing large collections better?

So a macro scroll bar moved halfway would instantly move 350 titles through a collection of 700 Perhaps i should separate into two issues - Collection navigation Invoking on-screen navigation buttons

Yeah this definitely sounds like 2 separate issues. And for the large collection navigation, maybe buttons to skip foward/back 50 titles or something would be a better solution? Or skip to next letter (if that's possible to do).

Created new issue for collection sorting - file browsing general, edited OP to single issue - button bar invocation.
