Pinging @elastic/kibana-visualizations (Team:Visualizations)
@nickofthyme: Rather than migrating the legacy color-by-range interface into the new color mapping interface, @markov00, @gvnmagni, and I were hoping to use this opportunity to make some usability improvements to it. Way back during the design exploration phase of the color mapping project, we collaborated to create some color mapping wireframes specific to range-based dimensions.
While some surrounding elements in the final color mapping interface may have changed, I believe the core concept is still valid and desirable. I'd personally love to see these suggestions incorporated. If ya'll agree, are these wireframes enough to work from? Or would you prefer to have high fidelity designs to work from before proceeding? Happy to provide additional design support as needed.

badge on new color mappingMy thought would be to combine the old palette UI and new color mapping into a single UI, allowing the user to select new and old palettes.
Currently the
palette
configuration is handled different than thecolorMapping
configuration, but we could implement this idea using both until we address this, while the user just sees a single experience.Depending on if the column should be colored by terms or values we can swap out the UI.
Other things to note:
syncColors
option for dashboards that does not exist in the new color mappings._Originally discussed in https://github.com/elastic/kibana/pull/189895#discussion_r1705751678_
