This is a version of @jakewarren's commit as part of a PR from back in 2015.

I've tried to implement this in a manner consistent with the other fuzzers.

I also found the original video that suggested this approach.

I've manually tested it here and in my dnstwister-embedded version but I'm also happy to write some automated tests if you want.
