Transport nerds use Streetmix to mock up potential reconfigurations of streets, such as http://streetmix.net/seabikeblog/15/1st-ave-streetcar-between-stops-right-turn-rem

I'd like a version for mocking up town planning / zoning. It would let the user draw zones on a map of a real place, and define rules for the kinds of land use they allow, and tell them how many houses, shops and office spaces their rules permit. I'd imagine it being graphically simpler--though it would be nice to have some sort of rendition of building height & bulk--but more complex in terms of what the user can specify.

I hadn't seen Streetmix before; very cool. I love these kinds of focused tools; meaningless too many, but amazing to the right audience.
