Can't activate keyboard on HTC Hero #1

HTC Hero has no camera button, so the virtual keyboard can't be activated.

Thanks for reporting that flaw... I had not had a chance to test it on anything
else
than an HTC Dream, and threw the virtual keyboard support in there hoping that
it
would work. Kind of figured that on a keyboard-less phone there would be other
ways
of bringing up the virtual keyboard too (like holding the Menu button). Anyway,
will
fix, shouldn't be a problem. Any suggestion on how you would like to activate
it? Are
there any other buttons that are standard to use for this? Could add a menu
option,
of course, but that seems a bit clumsy.

HTC Hero's virtual keyboard has no standard shortcut method to activate it. The
keyboard automatically pops up when you tap a text input field. Is it possible
to
change the keyboard activation to the search button? Or maybe the trackball is
better, since it can be found on most android devices?

I'll do some more thinking about this, but one thing I'll probably do is to add
a
menu where you can remap keys to different actions, as it's hard to know what
will be
available on different devices and what people prefer. I made some progress on
this
tonight and hope to have a new version ready in a couple of days.

The Search button may be handy for Hero, but on G1 you can't access it until you
slide open the physical keyboard, and then you have no need for the virtual
one, and
it would be nice to be able to use the key for something else. Could probably
make it
work differently depending on whether the physical keyboard exists though,
somehow.

I was indeed initially considering the trackball for bringing up the keyboard,
but I
thought that perhaps that will be needed for other user input in a future
version
(such as moving the character, making menu selections, or indicating a
position).
Maybe it can do both though.

In the new version 1.1.1, there is a Preferences screen available through the
application menu. You can reconfigure the key bindings there, so you should be
able
to make it so that the Search key activates the virtual keyboard.
