It probably isn't the most urgent problem right now but being able to see
the game via the graphical tiles from the nethack non-console pc version
would really help.

while graphical tiles would open the game to a larger userbase; it would also
greatly increase the size of the game itself.

I guess it's just like nerd cred when you play the tty version :)

Won't it be possible to release the graphical tiles as an external package
(like handcent does for font packages for instance) ?

I'm working on this, finally, and have a lot of it ready. I'm currently
inclined to include a small tile set (16x16 standard NetHack) in the core
application, so it can be the simple default option for new players without
increasing the size too much (<100 kB), and make additional larger tile sets
available in one or more additional packages. Any thoughts on that?

That's awesome, i think the default tiles for the Windows graphical version of
the game are pretty nice, i don't know if that's the one you are talking about.
After that it's just a matter of implementing the interface.

If you want any help just ask.

Tiles are in the new version 1.3.1 (and Slash'EM 1.2.1). I still haven't
released the additional tileset packages, but hope to get around to that soon.
