Element doesn't honor Synapse retention policies #4750

Steps to reproduce

  1. Configure retention policies in homeserver.yaml
  2. In Element Web old messages are no longer visible
  3. but in Element Android even very old messages can be seen

Outcome

What did you expect?

Old, expired messages to disappear in Element Android according to the retention policies

What happened instead?

Old messages are still visible in Element Android

I've labelled this as a major but I'm tempted to switch to an enhancement as it sounds more like a feature request
