it just starts happening seemingly at random; not related to multiple devices

I even have it in non encrypted rooms (local echo) e2e_release #41

A copy from Aaron's rageshake:

I caught the double local echo bug with e2e enabled on iOS (as reported by jeremy.) If you have 2x devices sharing an account with e2e enabled on both, type on the first device, then type on the second. The second will see a local echo (the echo isn't transmitted, just displayed.) Restarting the effected client returns the chat history to normal.

But I cannot reproduce the issue.
