Replace avatars by dragging images into the avatar field. #17789

Is your suggestion related to a problem? Please describe.

When quickly wanting to change a room avatar to some picture someone posted somewhere (in element or the web) I first need to save the picture, open it with gimp, crop it to some reasonable dimensions, save it again and then upload it as an avatar.

Describe the solution you'd like

Dragging an image over the old avatar to replace it (or similar).

Alternative

Instead I want to just copy the image or parts of it (gnome quick selection tool or windows snipping tool) to the clipboard and paste it into element as a new room avatar, saving all of the intermediary steps above.

I'm not aware of any other applications that allow a paste-to-set-avatar interaction, #1141 poses a more familiar solution to the problem you are facing

Would an option to drag an image over the old avatar to replace it (or similar) be enough for you? That seems like a saner solution to the problem

1141 definitely sounds like the biggest workflow improvement here. I think having such an editor staging area would also allow (if the design accounts for this) using dragging or pasting images into it though, so maybe we can have all the things here :).

@Bubu, I take this as you would be happy with a drag and drop solution? If that is the case, could you please rename the issue?

@SimonBrandner done.
