Be able to create a non-encrypted DM room #28308

Your use case

What would you like to do?

have a choice to create an non encrypted DM room at creation menu

Why would you like to do it?

When crating a DM, Encryption is turned on by default, and cannot be turned off. This locks historical messages from different devices behind a You need to verify this device for access to historical messages which is annoying especially of you use element across different devices, and cannot acess your other sessions in the moment. furthermore, E2EE is not a "must-have" for all scenarios, eg you will not be sending Credit Card numbers to you friends, would you.

How would you like to achieve it?

Have you considered any alternatives?

This is up to your server config

Product has previously rejected this due to it diluting the security of the product. You can always create an unencrypted room and convert it to DM manually /converttodm

If you wish instead to challenge this Product decision I would suggest opening a discussion in https://github.com/element-hq/element-meta/discussions
