This is a bug tracker, not a support one, would suggest seeking the Matrix room in future for support.
I consider pulling the plug from under the users like that, a UX issue. Plus, managing the element of trust. It's not the first time an open-source chat app would have been purchased. What I wrote in the OP was exactly what I thought when I saw the sudden change. This is echoed in that blog post,
This is obviously a bold move: we’ve spent four years building up Riot’s reputation and persuading everyone to move their friends, families and teams onto it. Renaming is inevitably going to cause some confusion. We know that many of you reading this will have put their neck on the line to get folks to adopt Riot, and we really appreciate how frustrating it may be to have to explain the change to your users.
So here's my suggestion, though probably too late: link to that blog post, not to the unhelpful https://element.io/previously-riot page.
I've just updated my packages and rebooted. Next, wanted to start Riot... crickets. Nowhere to be found. What the heck.
Then I randomly saw with new icon in my Ubuntu, "Element". Huh?
Turns out it was a rebranded Riot.
What exactly is the story here? Was Riot bought out? (The vacuous language at "Riot is now Element" suggests that, and doesn't explain anything.)
Was this a case of language cleanup after the George Floyd riots?
Rebrandings are costly. What drove this decision?
