Summary Today, there's a great deal of friction involved with talking to people you already know (in your contacts book) using Element/Matrix. The friction is spread through poor usability on most Identity Server interactions and the clients not being as smart as they can around looking up contacts.

Intended outcome Make finding existing contacts on Element/Matrix in a privacy-preserving manner as seamless as possible. Consider how web/desktop users could benefit from their mobile contacts.

Being able to save a contact and renaming the contact would be useful and to have the ability to have your contacts encrypted and synced between devices and will work with other Matrix clients besides Element.

+1 to this, I recently got EMS and while renaming the room works here, there are various other situations where someone's name is some user/display name/online name and I'd like to change that to show as what I typically call them "John Smith".

It seems like a natural part of this also might be space specific names as well. For instance, in a particular space or room I might want to have a different name that's relevant for that community. The flexibility of changing it at a room level is nice, but it would also be a pain to change it for every room.
