Use Popover for search window #2485

Fixes #2498

Combines two PRs (#2480 and #2481) so that everything should work, including fixing some pre-existing issues. Reviewers may prefer to look at this PR rather than the separate ones which deal with the popover and the breadcrumbs seperately.
