Keyboard and touch pad not recognized in login screen #414

I have a Dell XPS 13 9380. I have been happily using Elementary OS 5.1 for the past two weeks. Today I left my computer and came back to find that I could not do anything on the login screen. Neither the touch pad nor the keyboard are recognized, so I cannot login. I am able to get to a root shell using the advanced boot options, and there the keyboard is recognized. Not sure if this is a bug or not, but it seems buggy to me.

For what it's worth, based on directions from https://techwiser.com/fix-keyboard-not-working-in-ubuntu-18-04/, I resolved this issue by:

First, booting into a live USB and manually downloading two packages:

I am not sure why Elementary stopped recognizing my keyboard and touchpad. The packages seem pretty basic.
