Super scientific mastodon poll that shows that some people were indeed bothered by the current title label and of those people a significant portion of them think this would be a good change. Also among people who weren’t bothered there’s several comments indicating that this would be a more positive and accurate change for them as well: https://mastodon.online/@danirabbit/109860894473767894
What Happened?
The current title label “Install untrusted app ‘foo’?” starts off with the assumption that the app is unfamiliar and untrusted. We’ve heard from users that this is kind of offensive when they’re installing apps they know and love.
Steps to Reproduce
Install a side loaded app that you already trust, notice the title label saying your beloved app is untrusted
Expected Behavior
We should be prompting folks to instruct the operating system whether or not it can trust the app (and its associated remote). A label like this might go over better:
“Trust and install ‘foo’?”
This still carries the implication that we’re doubling checking that this app should be trusted and giving information about ways it might abuse that trust, but we’re not automatically assuming that an app is untrusted ahead of time
