In WiFi lists, indicate whether a network is 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz #197

Add a little icon for every network on the WiFi menu that appears when clicking the top right WiFi icon as well as the list of WiFis in the network settings wireless page

I don't know if other platforms do this, and as far as I understand, it's not possible since one network might be broadcast on both spectra. What would listing the spectrum solve that the network name plus the signal strength does not?

If I know that one of my devices does not support 5GHz I can take that into consideration when going to that place again

@CodingSpiderFox if it doesn't support 5 GHz, then those networks will not show up in the indicator.

I mean when I go there with a device that supports both, then I see that there is no 2.4GHz WiFi, then, the second time I go there, I can make sure I won't bring an old device that doesn't support 5 GHz. Also, for performance optimizations in houses with multiple flats, I could see who is using which band and give some tips how overall frequency usage could be optimized.

I just switched ISPs that gives us one SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and I'm pretty sure it did connect to the 2.4GHz band first. It wasn't totally clear to me, but when I clicked on "settings" for my SSID in Network settings, it showed a low internet speed. I disconnected and then reconnected, and it showed a much higher speed, so I think it reconnected into the 5GHz band.

I went into the WiFi settings and manually selected the 5GHz band, disconnected and reconnected again to make sure it was working properly. I had to do the same thing in Windows 10, where it automatically connected to the 2.4GHz at boot, so I changed a setting for it to prefer 5GHz.

In W10, clicking on "properties" for my SSID brings me to WiFi settings where it tells me which band I'm in, which is really easy. It's not so clear in elementary OS. It would be nice if it would display it in the popover below: Screenshot from 2021-10-19 16 53 29
