@eleniharlan Do you have any images you'd like included? Either of food, of London, anything from your home/kitchen, etc?

eleniharlan commented 10 years ago

I will struggle to find many/any, but I will look....

egardner commented 10 years ago

I'm going to use the Recipe/blog page as a starting point (I consider that the core of the site) and then build out the home page based on that.

I've updated this a little more and hope to continue working on it over the next week or so. @eleniharlan I'm using some other images downloaded from your Flickr page, including the "kali orexi!" photo from your stream, which I think works well on the home page.

Aside from a list of recent posts, is there any other content that should show up on the home page when people first arrive at the site?

One thing I'm noticing currently is some inconsistency between Firefox and Safari when attempting to style the centered headline text that lives inside the full-bleed image section.

Here's an example in Safari (which works properly): screen shot 2014-04-29 at 7 48 49 am

And here's the same page in Firefox (which is off-balance): screen shot 2014-04-29 at 7 48 30 am

@egardner I'm not sure why it's off-centered. Browser specific issues are never much fun to diagnose.

One thing to note, the existing colors, styles etc were all defaults with Prose and Jekyll, so feel free to remove and alter them. I have no attachment to them.

I would also consider making the recent posts more prominent. A grid display of recent posts with photos might work well for a simple home page. We want people to see how to access the content immediately, and also to see what is new. Thank you for working on this!

I like the idea of a grid display, and I also think it helps to have a bit of text people can browse so they can start to read the first few lines of the post and then click to continue?

Yes thanks very much for working on this! My friend Laurence just lent me his DSLR kit so I will start snapping photos too!

I've made some updates here, added a grid of images to home page (see image below). Is there any other content that should be added to the home page?

The grid can support 3 rows and automatically pulls the most recent items from the "Recipes" category.

Hey Eric,

Thanks for the update! Sorry I've been a bit AWOL. Things are pretty crazy over here right now- we've made an offer on another flat and have spent the weekend sprucing ours up to go on the market! It's all moving rather quickly and is pretty consuming.

In general I like the layout of the site. In terms of other things I think some sort of social media reference will be good (ie follow me on Facebook/Flickr/Instagram etc. also a lot of blogs have a blog roll or similar which I think is useful to visitors of the site. I'd maybe call that "influences"?

A few other small changes, not sure if this is the right time to request them (or if I can do them myself through prose.io) -

I'm really excited to see this coming together! Just to help me understand where we are in the process, how much is there left to do before it's useable?

Hope you and Laurel are settling into your new place! My work are in the preliminary stages of possibly doing a project in Santa Monica... It probably wouldn't materialise for another year or two but I'm definitely pushing for more trips to California!

Speak soon, Eleni

@egardner I merged your branch into gh-pages, so branch off of that for any future work. @eleniharlan I implemented your changes (tzunior's table, posts, etc).

Eric, I would reconsider how space is used on the homepage. The splash image is nice but takes up a lot of space. Maybe it should not be 1/2 the height but 1/3 instead?

Another thing to consider, would be to show a teaser of the most recent post. So instead of a grid of 9 images/titles, do a two column layout - on the left hand side have the most recent post with its description (3-4 sentences) and splash image (scaled down of course), and on the right have boxes for other recent posts.

The facebook/flickr/instagram stuff I would put in the footer.

The blogroll thing is kind of unique to Wordpress. I would put that in About - we can add it in a separate column if you want, @eleniharlan.
