I really like this idea. It's a big piece of work and I'm swamped at the moment, but I will definitely look into it. I have the same problem with fields like publisher and genre in my list.
I have been mulling over the problems with publisher names, series names, author names, even genre names and while I like the idea of a 'bulk edit' ability, we also need a system that automatically performs these edits when a book is re-imported, or a new book added.
Where my thoughts have led me so far is we need:
Aliases: these are geniune aliases for the same person (typically author or editor). Eg. Iain Banks and Iain M. Banks are the same person, but he deliberately uses the two names to denote different genres. Similarly, other authors often use very different names for different classes of books. I am not sure how to handle them in list of authors, however.
Auto-Corrections: eg. "I. Asimov" should always be rewritten "Isaac Asimov"; "Penguin" can probably always be rewritten "Penguin Books" (though that is not clear).
The upshot of all this?
To edit the publishers of books, we probably need to present a list of all publishers than allow an edit, and perhaps have a radio button with three choices:
...just my 0.02c worth, but we probably want to avoid having to redo edits.
After adding many books, I'm finding that related books (same series, for example) often have different values (mostly formatting) for publisher, etc. It would be nice to have an easy way to select multiple books and the edit fields that are shared between them. Sort of like editing an mp3 id3 tag for multiple tracks from the same album.
