Catalan and Spanish Translation #520

Have you thought on translate your application to Catalan and Spanish languages? If you agree with that, I can help you and provide you both of them.

Hi,

We would love Catalan and Spanish translations. It looks like you are already familiar with github, but let us know if you need any help/hints/suggestions.

There are a lot of strings to translate, so take your time so you can avoid burnout! If you still wish to proceed, I have included below a brief blurb I sent to someone who recently enquired about translations.

FWIW, it will probably one day become a wiki entry, so if you can make any comments on the instructions, that would be welcome as well!

As a general rule, all strings should basically have the same meaning and intent. The only other rule is that if the original string is short (perhaps up to five words), the translation should try to be similarly short: this is because it is probably a string that appears on a menu, button, checkbox or window title. eg.

<string name="import_from_csv">Import from CSV File</string>

is a menu item from the "Admin & Prefs" activity.

If you are ever in doubt (eg. about where a string is used), please feel free to ask. I really appreciate what you are doing.

Also, you will notice some strings have '%s' or '%$s' symbols in them; this just means that another string will be substituted in this location. It gets a little more complex when there are two substitutions. In these cases we use a numbering system, as in:

<string name="column_is_blank">Column %1$s is blank at row %2$s</string>

we will pass the first parameter as the column number and the second as the row. If for some reason you need to rearrange this (for clarity or better grammar, then you can, for example:

<string name="column_is_blank">At row %2$s, column %1$s is blank </string>

I hope all this makes sense. If at any point you want me to build an APK file for you to install and test, just let me know.

This is another set of notes I previously sent regarding translating at github:

The basic approach is:

  1. register at github

  2. fork (really just a clone) the Book Catalogue repository. The master copy is at:

    https://github.com/eleybourn/Book-Catalogue

Forking will just create your own copy of the source on github. the 'Fork' button is on the top right

  1. In your repository copy, browse to 'res/values/strings.xml for the English version and res/values-it/strings for the Italian version

There should be an 'Edit' button when viewing the file, and you should be able to cut the missing strings from the English version and paste them into the Italian version, then start working through them.

  1. When you are done, let me know, and I should be able to 'pull' your changes into the master copy.

Just thought I would check in to see how this was going. Someone else has offered to help with Spanish translations...should I introduce you via email so that they can help you?

Hello,

At this moment I am working on Catalan translation. Now, my work load does not let me work on Spanish translation. So, if there is any people that can work on Spanish translation, it would be great.

Hi. I have some free time and would like to help with the spanish translation. I have no experience in Github, but I've read the recommendations and instructions that you have put before. I can join??

Everyone is welcome; feel free to start work, but pace yourself...it's a big job to start with.

Ask any questions here, or via email. We would like to build a guide for new translators.
