Won't search all databases. #907

When I scan a new book into the app the only databases that are searched are Library Thing and book catalogue. It used to search using Amazon, Google Books, goodreads and LibraryThing for data. It still says in the description of the app that all those databases are searched. Is there a setting I can change or way to fix this?

Hi Rayne,

Google Books and Amazon are still searched. However the LibraryThing and Goodreads APIs are no longer available. We need to update the description - thank you for catching that

Cheers, -E

When I scan a new book in it just says that it is searching book catalogue. It does not say it searches Amazon/Google etc because of this not all the info for the book is filled out automatically. So I don't think mine is searching all the databases. I have Uninstalled and reinstalled the app and that didnt work and it is up to date in the app store.

Thanks.

Because of recent changes in how these platforms work, the search is centralised via book-catalogue.com.

These same changes have removed some fields (e.g. series information). Sometimes we can get the information from other sources, but it's hit or miss.

I have had the experience in the last few months that ISBN search fails quite often (about 30% of the time). This despite the same books showing up in LibraryThing when I supply amazon.co.uk as the back-end. Is this an expected effect of the centralisation at book-catalogue.com? Can anything be done to improve matters?

I can supply examples of failed ISBNs if it would help.

Is there a chance that series information is going to make a return soon? It made life so much easier with that information autofilling. I also noticed the last few books I scanned came in as BOOK format instead of Hardcover, adding another small step to fixing a new entry.

This is still by far my favorite app I have used, just unfortunate to lose some nice QoL features like this.
