🤕 What's not right?
While streaming specific content is great! Sometimes its nice to be able to just sheep-out, pick a channel you like, and let it tell you what you're watching... Not to mention live events such as SPORTS, AND EVEN PPV EVENTS. These are categories that are a MUST have for many consumers today in this segment. Currently, there are no modern IPTV options offered on the store and I believe the solution to this is Threadfin. Their major improvements to xTeVe include a fancy new Bootstrap based UI and RAM based buffer instead of File based... Plus so much more.
Elfhosted.com offers the latest and greatest, cutting-edge options for every other media server use-case i can think of; so I don't see why we don't do the same with IPTV and offer Threadfin. We current offer two much older IPTV clients that lack the support for many of the features that are offered by modern IPTV providers. More features, better integration, less bandwidth and active support as they just made their 99th release of Threadfin public a week ago. I know i sound like a shill but i've actually never even used the app myself, ive only read about it extensively but I am an avid IPTV user and would love a worthwhile option to add that to my elfhosted server stack!
Threadfin is an actively maintained fork of xTeVe (popular IPTV client last updated in 2021) with quite a few new tricks up its sleeve and according to many, is a much more stable option than its predecessor (or any of the few other IPTV solutions for media servers). While xTeVe is known to be a more difficult App to configure (especially the maintaining of a channel list which is very tedious compared to more modern methods), anyone could configure Threadfin with ease... Also it works great in Plex (with Plex DVR support!), Emby, and Jellyfin.
You can upload an m3u file or link (the old-school way) OR enjoy the UI of one of the many modern IPTV providers that let you pick and chose your Live Channels (everything from HBO to the Food Network and between), On-Demand content, access to every sports channel ever so forget paying for expensive (NFL league pass etc) and even channels like "24/7 Seinfeld" or (insert your favorite show - they have over 200 24/7 single show channels alone on the provider i use), AND LIVE SPORTS/PAY PER VIEW! This way you can not only keep it limited to the content you care about, but greatly reduces the server traffic during weekly Also did i mention it works with the NATIVE DVR FEATURE in Plex so you could theoretically record your favorite shows as they air and have it ready for you, on your server, before the any other sources make it available ;). Threadfin as also improved upon its predecessor by adding support for modern codecs with better compression like H264 and HEVC.
The IPTV provider i use has over 40,195+ Live Channels, 25k On demand movies that you can pick and choose to add to your playlist. This provider, and most other ones, offer unlimited streaming with than many channel options for around $10/month, so it must be bandwidth efficient enough to be profitable for our elf-overlords to offer. You can also source separate channel playlists (from the same provider) to keep things more organized and to limit the time it takes to do weekly EPG updates.
🤔 On the other hand..
The only other modern and currently supported IPTV client, i know of, is Telly, which you can read about on their Github "about me page" here. It is better than NextPVR which wont even function on Plex any more, but just a quick read of the link above and I can already tell it doesn't hold a candle to Threadfin in terms of features, reliability, and community support.
🤩 But will it fly?
I don't see why it wouldn't fly - we already offer xTeVe, which was the foundation that Threadfin forked from. With its support for multiple playlists and more modern and efficient codecs, I imagine it is less bandwidth-intensive than xTeVe and a quick search will show you that, out of all the open-source IPTV clients, Threadfin is the indisputable best option and has BY FAR the most community supported/maintained with over 40 sub forks and an active discord for support.
I LOVE streaming content through RD but we are missing live sports and for people like me who share our servers with older folks, I can tell you from experience, they love IPTV. It replicates the modern premium cable experience our parents still use. I love it for when I'm feeling too lazy and just want something on in the background and for sports/PPV events like UFC and the Olympics.
The Elf style of on-demand media streaming is unbeatable when you know what you want to watch and for building a collection but there's something nice about good old scheduled broadcasting every now and then lol
